New Chrome Web Store Logo

The title says it all, Google have have updated the logo for the Chrome Web Store! It looks good in my opinion. It's always interesting to see how Google are confident about constantly reviewing and updating logos and brandings to keep up with (or ahead of) the competition.

Chrome OS Just Keeps Getting Better

Google's Chromebook's work just like the Chrome web browser, fast, safe and always update. This automatic update feature is the opposite of what many people are used to with updates from Microsoft. These are more often than not security updates and always seem to require a restart of your PC, just when you need to finish what you are working on! Google's Chrome browser updates in the background and launches as the new version next time you open the browser. So without even realising it, and without user intervention, everyone keeps up to date.

Chrome OS works in the same way, keeping your Chromebook up to date. Chrome OS's "desktop" inspired UI tweak, which was reported on in April 2012, has arrived. This update features some UI styling which can be found on Chrome for Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) and the reported on desktop style UI.

With increasingly quick machines being launched running Chrome OS task's such as multiple tab browsing, YouTube video playback and online games are running smoother than ever. And with the recent release of Google Drive it is even easier to manage your documents and files accross Chromebook's and PC's, Mac's and Linux distro's.

For a guided tour of the improved Chrome experience see the YouTube video below. And for more details check out Google's Chromebook webpage.

No +"new tab" Button for Chrome 17

The latest public release of Google Chrome, version 17, features a streamlined "new tab" button. This is only a small change to the already sleek UI. Google have simply removed the "+" label from the button. This has been a feature of Google Chrome Canary (the development version of Chrome) for some time. The images below show the old and new "new tab" buttons.

The Internet and the Browser

Google's App Store has loads of apps to choose from but this one caught my eye and deserves a few minutes of your attention. This app is actually just a link to a website, a particularly well made website. It's a virtual book with a history of the internet and web browsers. It's written by the team behind Google Chrome, but it applies to all web browsers.

The book goes through 20 things that everyone might want to know about how web browsers and the internet works, and the best thing is that it's free. It covers all the big questions and covers the big topics such as "What is the Internet?".

The book is at www.20thingsilearned.com and on the Chrome Web Store.

Happy reading.

Mozilla Firefox 5

Mozilla have released a new version of their popular web browser, Firefox 5. Firefox 5 looks almost identical to Firefox 4 but it loads much faster and feels snappy when loading new pages. It's main improvements are behind the scenes but it's still worth a download. Although there is the inevitable wait for third party add-ons to be updated and become compatible with the latest version.

Firefox Download Button

The Web Browser scores have been updated, shockingly Firefox 5 didn't get a better score than Firefox 4, but it still feels much quicker when browsing. Google's Chrome browser version 12 has the best score by far...

Chromebook

Google announced Chromium OS, an open source operating system, based on the idea that the internet (via Google Chrome) was all you needed. Then Google ran the CR-48 beta project where Google Chromium OS was the only installed operating system loaded onto a dedicated laptop given to participants in the trial. The information collected and extensive research conducted by Google has lead to their recent announcement of fully fledged Chromium OS laptops called Chromebooks.

The new Chromebooks from Acer and Samsung will be available in the US on the 15th June 2011. To explain the difference between a regular PC and a Chromebook check out this video from Google.

Google Chrome leaves Beta behind

Google have released Google Chrome and left it's beta status behind. The Google Blog details that releases for Windows, Apple Mac and Linux are all now stable versions without the Beta label. They also claim that the latest version is even faster. On Windows in particular Google Chrome is lightning fast. This should spell an end to websites not always loading properly in Google Chrome. It should rival Mozilla Firefox for compatibility.

To test the speed of Google Chrome or other web browsers on your computer check out the V8 Benchmark Suite. Feel free to send us your browsers scores to @webwarpblog on twitter.

So open Google Chrome now and the latest version will automatically update itself, without requiring as much as a browser restart, let alone a computer restart! Google Chrome's innovative updating sequence is the most hassle free I have ever encountered.

Thanks to @punctualwaffle on twitter for this story.

Google Chrome Crash Reload

Google Chrome's crash recovery is spot on, not only does it manage 'bad tabs' individually allowing you to just reload the tab not the whole program but when the program does crash it can reload all your tabs, as I found out earlier:

In a moment of calamity today I managed to switch off my PC from the plug! On rebooting windows I faced the daunting task of reopening all the programs and windows that I was using and trying to remember what unsaved things I had lost. I had a few tabs in Google Chrome with webpages that I had visited hours before but was still referring to. On reopening Chrome, with the intention of trawling through my history to find the right pages again, Chrome notified me that it hadn't previously been closed properly and promptly reopened all my previous tabs! Thank you Google!

I won't mention the Microsoft Office Auto Recover fun I had!
