You can now take a Wi-Fi connection with you, where ever you go*. And I'm not talking about home broadband packages which include access to hotspots around the country, such as BT and Sky (Sky's new tie up with The Cloud was covered on the blog: http://webwarpblog.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/sky-wifi.html). This blogpost is about the brilliance of MiFi Mobile Broadband. MiFi is a 3G internet connected Wi-Fi router which fits in the palm of your hand. You can connect multiple devices to it so they can all share the single 3G data connection.
A couple of 3 MiFi devices |
This can be a great money saver. Maybe your are travelling on business with colleagues, you can all share one data connection instead of each paying for expensive hotel Wi-Fi access. Or you could save around £100 up front and have no monthly data package that you would spend on an iPad Wi-Fi + 3G, but you can connect your Wi-Fi iPad to the MiFi device to get 3G internet access anywhere*.
With good network coverage you get faster than fixed line speeds over 3G, this is certainly true of three's network. Using a MiFi device is similar to tethering to a smartphone, but typically the Wi-Fi stay's 'always on' so you can connect automatically, just like a regular wireless router. Smartphones tend to be setup to time out on inactivity, unless they connected to at least one device.
For more information about getting your hand's on one of these devices contact your preferred mobile provider, such as three mobile broadband.

*obviously you need 3G coverage, which varies by network provider!
